Philosophy Discussion

Status:Active, open to new members
Leader:
When: Monthly on Thursday afternoons
3rd Thursday monthly 2-4pm
Venue: Vision Hall

The group was started on the 20th of September 2012 when seven of us met at my house to discuss Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” It set the tone and format for over 10 years of interesting and informative meetings.

These meetings are suitable for everyone with an interest in matters of a philosophical nature, such as the purpose of human existence, how we should lead a virtuous life, is there a God, and what is truth? Philosophy ca be thought of as the questioning of accepted beliefs between science and religion.

Everyone is welcome and no prior knowledge of Philosophy is required, just the ability to listen, ask questions when they do not understand what is said and have the desire to learn through discussion as everyone learns from each other. Why is your mind like a parachute? To be effective it must be fully open. Please bring one with you! At the end of our meetings most people find that their mind has been opened to new ideas and ways of thinking.

At the start of each meeting the group is reminded that it is intended to stretch our minds and encourage critical thinking. There are no silly questions, and the answers can sometimes raise more questions, rather than provide straight answers. Everyone is encouraged to give each other space and respect.

Our meetings are safe places, and no one is under any form of pressure to answer anything they feel uncomfortable with, and anything that is said should be confidential. However, some sensitive areas are covered and those present are careful to listen to each other’s experiences and opinions with respect.

If this all sounds rather dull and dreary, then you would be surprised at how much laughter and good humour emerges from these meetings. After all, life is too short to be taken too seriously.

The group never gets to a definitive answer, but it gives the group plenty to think about, broadens everyone's perspective on life and provides an enjoyable afternoon.

It is requested that you wear your u3a badge and that is has contact details of your next of kin.

Looking forward to seeing you for enlightening discussions on things that matter to all of us.
